½” Thick Maple Floor Fails!

Posted November 5, 2010 by

Red Mesa High School (Red Mesa, AZ) the story of ½” thick maple flooring is one of failure. The Redskins thought they were getting the best floor money could buy but to their surprise, their floor failed due to minor water leak. The school had selected a floor utilizing ½” thick maple flooring thinking it was the wave of the future but when the facility experienced moisture from under an exterior door, the thin maple buckled and failed. Other contributing factors that led to the failure included a sub-floor system with no ventilation so options for even trying to dry out the floor did not exist. As some manufactures try to drive costs out of floors they are forgetting the fundamental reason traditional ¾” thick maple has been used and continues to be used. Dimensional stability! Even though moisture is not a warranty item owners should be aware that these type of failures cost schools big bucks. The ½” flooring didn’t allow the floor to be sanded again, as there was less than 0.20” sanding left. Coupled that with all the nails sticking up, the floor did not have enough material left to sand.

Red Mesa High School contacted Arizona Gym Floors www.azgymfloors.com to make a recommendation to replace the failed gym floor. The failed ½” maple was replaced with Aacer’s ScissorLoc ™ PowerVent™ Hardwood Sports Floor which provides excellent playability along with technology PowerVent™ Blower System that puts moisture issues in check.
